Tato Saavedra has surfed El Faro since he was 12. He takes surfers to the peak in his mototaxi, waits with the boards and your things while the session lasts, and also runs the trip to Puémape and the one to the El Cañoncillo lagoons.

Where he takes you
El Faro
2.8 km from the hostel, 12 minutes by road. The long left of Pacasmayo breaks there, at the foot of the chequered lighthouse, and the peak is out at the end of the point, not in front of the town beach.

Half an hour south
Puémape: a left point break, a sandy beach and ceviche
A fishing cove 22 km down the Panamericana. The wave breaks over a stone bottom at the point, and next to it opens a wide sandy beach, with reed boats pulled up and a couple of ceviche places facing the sea.
You can go just for the day: swim, look at the pools among the rocks and have fish straight out of the water for lunch. You do not need to surf for the trip to be worth it.
To surf there: early, or on days with little wind, and ideally on a mid to low tide. With a lot of water the wave breaks further up, over the stones. The name is written Puémape and also Poemape, depending on the map or the guide: it is the same cove.

The lagoons of El Cañoncillo
A forest of more than a hundred thousand carob trees with two lagoons, the Gallinazo and La Larga, in the middle of a desert of dunes. A private conservation area of 1,310 hectares, 24 km from the hostel, about 40 minutes up the Panamericana Norte.
July and August are the months with the most water in the lagoons.

What almost everyone asks
Does the hostel book the ride for me?
No. You deal with Tato directly, on WhatsApp or by phone. The hostel publishes his contact because Tato is a trusted friend of Óscar's, from years back, not because there is a commercial arrangement: nobody charges anybody a commission.
How many people fit in the mototaxi?
One to three, with the boards on top. If there are more of you, let him know in advance so he can arrange another mototaxi.
Are the prices per person or per trip?
Per trip, for one to three people. The prices on this page are those of September 2026.
Do I need to book in advance?
Let him know the day before for anything that leaves early: Puémape, the El Cañoncillo lagoons and El Faro at dawn as well. For a later trip to El Faro, a message a while before is enough.
Does Tato speak English?
